UPDATE: Since I wrote this post in April, I have lost 4 more inches off my waist. Click here to read my “update” post about this.
So some of you may know that I just had a baby in January (read the home birth story here). That was our second baby, and our first was born in the summer of 2010. Ever since the birth of our first baby that summer, I have had a tummy pooch that I just could not get rid of!
It made me feel very self-conscious of my tummy and I always tried to hide it (usually unsuccessfully!) with the clothes that I wore.
As fate would have it, I was introduced to Beth of Fit2B Studios shortly before I gave birth to our daughter this past January. I learned from her and her really cool website that I actually had something called a diastasis recti. What this basically means is that I had a separation of my abdomen muscles. That is why I had a tummy pooch!
I also learned that I was not the only one with this problem, and that it is actually very common for women to suffer from a diastasis after they give birth. Most women are not aware of this, and for many women, the problem is worsened with each pregnancy. The only way to correct a diastasis is either through surgery or through special exercises. And get this – crunches, sit-ups, and planks can actually worsen the condition!
As I learned all of this information, I wondered why nobody had told me this before! The truth is that there is a lot of misinformation on this topic out there.
I am by no means an expert on information about core strength or diastasis. I encourage you to read this article from Beth at Fit2B about how to have a STRONGER, more FLAT stomach. Here is an excerpt from the article that I love:
Since college, and since subjecting my core to pregnancy and birth, I have learned the secret to a flat stomach and a rock-solid core – a core that lets you jump on the trampoline without peeing your pants, a core that pulls back in after having a baby, a core that is there for you when you need to lift something heavy like a four year old kid, a core that heals completely after abdominal surgery. And that secret is so simple, and it resides in your God-given girdle: your transverse abdominus (TVA).
What I did to improve my diastasis
After I looked around Beth’s website and read a lot of testimonials and articles on her blog, I was convinced. I watched this video to determine if I had a diastasis, and sure enough I did. It was 3 finger widths wide. While this wasn’t by any means good, it wasn’t so bad that it would require surgery to correct.
So after talking to Beth, I ordered a splint to wear and started intentionally working out with the tummy-safe videos that she has on her site. The first four videos really target the transverse abdominus (your God-given girdle!), and I focused on those videos for several weeks.
After wearing the splint and doing the exercises on Fit2B for just 6 weeks, I lost 5″ off my waist! Believe it or not my tummy looks flatter now than it did before I became pregnant with our second child.
Now I still have a little ways to go, as I do still have a little pooch. My diastasis is now 1 finger width instead of 3. But as long as I am consistent with doing the tummy exercises on Fit2B, I continually see results. So I am confident that before long, “the pooch” will be completely gone!
I had pretty much given up hope that I could ever have a flat tummy again, but thanks to Beth and all of her great workout videos I know that it will happen!
Would you like to workout with Beth on Fit2B and improve your core?
If you can relate to my dilemma of having a tummy pooch no matter what you do, then you might be able to benefit from the exercise videos on Beth’s site like I did.
Some of the things that I really like about Fit2B that you might like also:
- It is affordable. You pay a monthly fee and have access to the videos 24/7.
- You don’t have to leave your house to go to the gym. You can workout in your pajamas if you want to before you even brush your teeth for the day!
- Even busy moms can fit in these workouts. They are not long, and you don’t have to change your clothes to do them! If you can find just 10-15 minutes in your day then you can fit in these workouts.
- Beth is really nice! She won’t yell at you while you are working out. She is relatable, and will give you lots of confidence in yourself.
- These workouts honestly give results – and you don’t even have to get on the floor to do crunches!
